Laptop Security Tips:

 

Physical Security

  • Always keep a hand on your laptop case in busy areas.
  • Use a lock to attach the laptop to a secure, heavy object.
  • Put an identification label on the laptop.
  • Write down your laptop's serial number and register it with the manufacturer.
  • Install a location tracking program on the laptop.
  • In airports, wait for the crowd to disperse at the end of the screening belt before placing your laptop in the machine.

Data Security

  • Disable CD booting in your BIOS.
  • Assign a password to your BIOS.
  • Remove any guest accounts.
  • Rename the default Administrator account.
  • Use a secure password.  (Upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols)
  • Install any security updates for the operating system.
  • Install antivirus and anti-spyware tools.  Run frequent scans.
  • Encrypt important files.  (Not possible in Windows XP Home)
  • Avoid unencrypted wireless hotspots.
  • Never open attachments in emails from parties you do not know.
  • Avoid downloading "freeware", unless the source is known to you.
  • Keep your browser set to at least Medium security.
  • Consider creating and logging on to your computer with a lower privileged account when surfing the web.
